Have you ever seen Dumb and Dumber? It was a film in the 90s about a couple of friends who became a target of murdering criminals because they inadvertently took a suitcase of money. Little do they know that there were goons on their trail. While the goons were hunting them, they all thought that they're a couple of skilled, cold blooded killers but they're actually just a couple of dumb guys.
Anywho, Finlay Donovan was kind of in the same boat. In her mind, she was failing as a mother. She failed as a wife (recently divorced); failing as a novelist as she was behind on her deadline. She's broke and purely dependent on her ex husband to provide for her and the kids. Even though her ex husband is actually engaged to another woman. But while she was in a meeting with her agent about the latest plot of her novel (which, by the way, she was only winging), another woman thought Finlay was an actual assassin. Before she knows it, the woman hired her to kill her husband.
Let me tell you, the way this story unravel was kind of a clumsy comedy of errors. While it was fun and a little insane, I have to say that Cosimano kept a tight ship. It was believable and made total sense. You would think this mother of two would be like, 'hell no, I'm not killing anyone!'. Let me just say that she didn't actually agree. But you would have to read the book to see how the sequence of events fell like a mad, tumbling dominoes.
It was brilliant and funny -- just like Finlay is. But she's not intentionally funny, you know? She just kept making choices that none of us mere mortals will make in real life. Yet somehow, the chips fall to her favour. Granted, she's now a notorious assassin, but she never really intended to be one, you know? What I also love about this book is it has women characters taking control of their lives. Nefarious though their methods may be. We have a woman who was married to the mob accountant who has a penchant for drugging women and taking their pictures for future blackmail purposes. And another one who was married to the mob enforcer who likes to use his heavy hand to control his wife. In Finlay's case, not only was she able to finally be financially independent from her ex, the cases she worked on became a novel that was soon-to-be a hit. So she's no longer a mediocre novelist. I just love everything about this novel.
I believe this is going to be a series of books so I can't wait to see what Elle Cosimano & Finlay Donovan end up. Wherever that may be, I'm sure it will be a rip-roaring fun.
